What is Liechtenstein known for?

Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world, with a total area of 62 square miles and a population of 38,000. It’s Europe’s fourth smallest country and the second least-visited country in the continent. Just 80,000 tourists make the trip each year.

Liechtenstein has a mix of visitors. Most come for skiing, the country has a great resort in Malbun, with ideal slopes for all skiers. If you are not coming for skiing, many day-trippers from Switzerland come to spend the day mostly in Vaduz (and for the Liechtenstein passport stamp). The area is also known for its stunning hiking trails in the summer months.

Despite its small size, this micro state ranks in the top positions of many international rankings. Economically, Liechtenstein is the world’s richest country per capita, with one of the highest standards of living. It has the lowest corporation tax rates in Europe and crime is close to non-existent, too.

But Liechtenstein is not only strong in numbers but also an attractive travel destination. Its amazing mountainous landscape has made the country a perfect place where visitors can enjoy various winter sports. It is also known for its friendly locals, fabulous cuisine, mesmerizing Alpine views, and charming villages.

What are the best places to visit in Liechtenstein?

Visitors will be surprised and delighted by how much this tiny country has to offer. Here’s our guide to some of the most beautiful places to visit in Liechtenstein. Given the country’s gorgeous Alpine location, nature and sports are the highlights of any visit: superb skiing, hiking and beautiful walks abound.

Schaan is the largest and the northernmost municipality in Liechtenstein. It’s a charming little town where visitors enjoy strolling the streets and taking in the local atmosphere. One of the main attractions of the town is the beautiful church located in the center of town.

Vaduz is located just 5-10 minutes drive from Schaan. As you approach the capital town, you can see the famous Vaduz Castle perched on a hilltop. Enjoy walking the beautiful pedestrian street in Städtle. This street is lined with beautiful shops, excellent restaurants and quaint cafes. Städtle also houses the Liechtenstein National Museum,p which will take you through the history of Liechtenstein. On the south end of the street is the Peter-Kaiser-Platz, the square which houses Liechtenstein’s government. Right next door is the St. Florin Cathedral, a beautiful church built in the 19th century.

The Vaduz Castle is a 20 min uphill walk from Städtle or a 5-minute drive. The views from the top of the hill are beautiful. You can see the whole valley with the Rhine flowing through. Do note that the castle is not open to visitors since the royal family resides there. So if you do take the hike up here it has to be for the views.

Triesenberg is a beautiful small mountain town. The views from the edge of the town down into the valley are breathtaking. Another town, Balzers, is where you’ll find the Gutenberg Castle situated high on a hill. This castle is open to the public as a museum and has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The castle itself was built in the late Middle Ages.

Many visitors enjoy the amazing hiking routes which include: The Liechtenstein Trail, a route which connects all the municipalities; Princes’ Way Hike, a high altitude walking adventure; Princess Trail, a round trip hike along a flower-filled mountain ridge; and Alpaca and Lama Trekking, for some, this is the primary reason to visit Liechtenstein, the hiking trail is amazing for trekking. Mountain Biking and Cycling are also popular activities in the warmer months.

In the winter months, many visitors come to the small town of Malbun, a draw for all winter sports enthusiasts. Perched on an Alpine ridge near the Saminatal Valley, Malbun offers perfect snow conditions that lead to the first ski lifts and slopes in the 1960’s. Today, over 14 miles of trails are maintained and suitable for skiers of all abilities. The resort is also popular in the spring and summer months, too, when the slopes become a magnet for hikers, climbers, and mountain bikers.

What is the best way to get around Liechtenstein?

There’s just one major road in Liechtenstein, so in an effort to reduce traffic, use of public transport is encouraged, and made inexpensive and efficient. No matter where you want to go in the country, there’ll be a Liemobil (https://www.liemobil.li/) bus to take you there. Bus tickets start from 2 CHF for a short single ride to 15 CHF for unlimited rides for a full day.

Another option is to grab one of the free rental bikes that are located across the country. There are 62 miles of cycle paths in Liechtenstein to explore.

Do people speak English in Liechtenstein?

The official language of Liechtenstein is German, but there are around a dozen dialects spoken across the country. English is not common, but many of the tourist destinations know can speak enough to get by. We suggest you get a good English-German guidebook or app on your phone and familiarize yourself with common phrases such as hello, goodbye, excuse me and numbers 1-10.

The peak of the tourist season starts at the end of fall and lasts until the beginning of spring, for the reason that the country is considered the center of skiing and extreme winter sports. You can expect frequent snowfalls. Mid Season falls in the summer months, June to August. During this time, the country experiences good weather, which brings some of the biggest festivals. However, the best time to visit will vary based on your preferences. This guide is intended to help you determine the best time of year for you to visit.

November – March (Winter)

This is the time when people prefer to visit Liechtenstein. The stunning Alpine region is a haven for skiing enthusiasts. It is not overly crowded, so the pristine natural scenery is breathtaking. You can expect frequent snowfalls. The weather is ideal for winter sports with temperatures hovering around 41 – 50° F, sometimes going down to 30°F. On average, it rains or snows a fair amount: 2 to 6 times per month.

If you are visiting in the winter, head to the small town of Malburn, perched on an alpine ridge, the town boasts several ski lifts, perfect snow conditions and a natural ice rink. Its many groomed trails and après ski activities make for a fantastic winter getaway. For kids, Malbi Park Kinderland offers beginners ski lessons and programs, and the area also boasts a large network of Nordic ski trails.

Also in winter, hiking in the Alps and valley are extremely popular. During the holidays, colorful festivals and lively events are held, which allows visitors to get a taste of the traditions and mingle with the locals.

Events and Festivals

– Operettas in Vaduz/Balzers: Rotating between cities each year, the Liechtenstein Operettas is a three month opera celebration. The festivals are held either in Balzers or Vaduz and generally last from the end of January through the middle of March.

– Treisenberg Spring: Taking place over a weekend at the end of March, the Treisenberg Spring festival is a celebration of the coming warm season in Liechtenstein. Classical music is used to entertain the masses and amazing rhythms can be heard echoing throughout the township.- Christmas Market: Each December a Christmas market takes place in Vaduz.

April – June (spring)

Visiting during the spring months is considered off-season (April – June). In regards to weather, humidity and temperatures combine to make this season feel moderately cold. Highs range from 50°F to 71°F, with warmer temperatures in the later months. The snowfall begins to melt making it at bearable levels but allowing you to still see Liechtenstein beautiful snow-capped Alpines. Additionally, the crowds from the ski slopes have thinned out, and the summer crowds have not yet started coming in. Keep in mind, sunny days becomes significantly more in June than in May.

Events and Festivals

– Bargar-Fruahlig-Mountain Spring: After a long winter, visitors celebrate the coming warmth at the traditional Treisenberg Spring festival in April and May. However, the event is more about cuisine than music, with local restaurants, Café Guflina and Restaurant Kainer, offering a magnificent selection of spring foods.

July – August (summer)

July through August are ideal to visit in terms of weather. During this period, the country experiences beautiful temperatures, although it can get hot, it is often interrupted by rain showers or thunderstorms. Visitors flock to Liechtenstein to enjoy the wildflowers growing all across the valley. The snow thaws during this season, even in the higher passes, so you will be able to hike a large area of trails.

Average temperatures this time of year are typically in the low 80s° F. Some highlights in the summer months are the beautiful and expansive hiking trails and outdoor adventures such as mountain biking and nature trails. The summer also offers a variety of festivals.

Events and Festivals

– Film Festival Vaduz: For two weeks in July, Vaduz turns on the charm when it hosts its annual film festival. Flicks from around Liechtenstein, Europe, and other parts of the globe are screened, mostly in beautiful open air cinemas around the capital.

– National Day of Liechtenstein: Held on August 15, National Day of Liechtenstein is celebrated across the country. Musical events, parades, dance performances, games, and traditional cuisine are the center of attention until 10:00 p.m. when fireworks light up the sky near Vaduz Castle.

– Liechtenstein Guitar Days: This weeklong festival held in July, brings the best guitar players from around the country and Europe to Eschen. An international competition is what attracts the most visitors, but there are also plenty of workshops and concerts.

September – October (Fall)

September and October make one of the most beautiful times to visit with the weather being fairly warm, but mildly chilly, and vibrant fall colors taking over the slopes (typically start to change color the end of September). For visitors preferring to explore the alpine nation with less crowds, these months are ideal.

Temperatures are starting to dip in September and October averaging around mid-40’s° F to 70’s° F. Mornings sometimes start out a bit crisp, across the valley, mountains in the distance hint that winter is waiting in the wings. The weather is comfortable for hiking throughout the country, from Liechtenstein’s mountainous corner (Malbun) to the river bank, along forest paths, and through the city streets.

Events and Festivals

– The Annual Fair: The annual fair used to be held each autumn as part of the cattle market, where traders would sell their goods to local farmers. Today a number of markets take place each year at this time, often featuring fun fair rides.

What to expect while traveling
