Getting Around Negril
By Walking
Negril is spread out, stretching for miles. Some visitors choose to walk, but it can be long if you are going to the northern edge of Long Bay or to the West End. In the daytime, walking along the beach such as the Seven Mile stretch is highly walkable, with many resorts, restaurants, bars, and shops along the beach and the main road. You can easily explore the area on foot while enjoying the scenic coastline. The West End (Cliffs) is also walking with many guesthouses, restaurants, and attractions within walking distance. However, be cautious as there are fewer sidewalks, and traffic can get busy at times.
Walking at night is not recommended due to limited street lighting, especially in less developed areas. We recommend taking a taxi for safety.
By Private Shuttle
Some hotels and resorts offer complimentary shuttles to and from popular areas (West End to Seven Mile Beach). This can be a convenient option if you don’t want to deal with taxis.
By Bicycle
Some hotels and resorts offer bicycle rentals, and this is a great way to explore shorter distances, particularly along the beach road.
By Car
Having a car in Jamaica has its pros and cons. Some of the roads are in disrepair, you may find erratic drivers and the road signs can be unhelpful. However, the island is relatively easy to drive overall and the distances are small. Also, keep in mind that you’ll have to drive on the left side of the road.
There are car rental companies available once you arrive at the airport. To rent a car you’ll need a current license from your home country. Most companies stipulate that drivers must be at least 21 years old.
By Taxi
Negril has “Route taxis” (shared taxis), which is the most affordable way to get around Negril. They operated like buses on fixed routes. Just flag them down on the street. You will share the ride with other passengers.
Private taxis are everywhere in town. You can negotiate the fares with the driver, be sure to agree on a price before getting in. These are more expensive but offer more convenience as well. Short trips around town typically run around $10-$20 USD.
JUTA (Jamaica Union of Travelers Association) is a licensed taxis and tour operator that cater to tourists in town. They are a bit more expensive but are also known for their professionalism and reliability. You can book JUTA taxis for airport transfers or day trips to places further outside of town.

Negril, a shortened version of “Negrillo”, meaning ‘little black ones’, was named by the Spanish in 1494. There are two theories as to how it got its name: firstly, the black cliffs south of the village, and secondly, the large amount of black eels along Negril’s coast.

Negril is considered one of the safest areas for tourists to visit and explore. The local government has placed a priority on safety and security. However, as with any place you travel, it is always recommended to stay smart and aware of your surroundings. We recommend you stick with reputable transport services, such as the in-house transfer services offered by your hotel/resort. It’s always a good idea to avoid leaving your valuable possessions unattended. You can store them in your in-suite safe if you want them to be really secure, but generally, you just need to make sure you don’t abandon your belongings anywhere.
