Renting a car is a great idea if you’d like the freedom of getting around the island on your time and schedule. It is also necessary if you plan to do some serious sightseeing on the island, as getting around by public transportation is slow, and taxi fares will add up quickly.
Be aware that drivers drive on the left side of the road. Most of the roads are 2 lanes, and for the most part, traffic travels at a slow to moderate pace. In most rural areas, the speed limit is 35 mph; certain parts of the major artery, Route 66, are 5mph. In towns and urban areas, the speed limit is 20 mph. Always remember to wear your seat belt – it’s the law.
Depending on your style of vacation, you may just want to stay in town or stick to the beaten path, and in this case, there are plenty of taxis to get you where you want to go. If you want to explore without renting a car, there are great open air taxis that will take you on a tour of the island while narrating interesting history about the island.
By Taxi
Taxis are readily available at the airport, hotels, and resorts. You can also call ahead to arrange a pick up/drop off. There are also Taxi Vans that locals use, which you can flag them down anywhere. Taxi Vans are clearly marked with a taxi light on the roof of the vehicle. The distance traveled determines the cost.
By Walking
Both Christiansted and Frederiksted are historic towns, built in the late 1700’s. They are great for walking but it is worth noting that the sidewalks can be challenging with uneven stones, curbs and bricks. Just take your time and walk carefully and you should be fine.
