How do I get to Bentota?

The Bandaranaike International Airport is the closest international airport to Benota. It is located 67 miles away, and the journey takes anywhere between 1-2 hours.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

There are buses, taxis, rental cars, and ride-sharing services at the airport. 

Buses are operated by the National Transport Commission and are the most affordable choice for many travelers. There are no direct buses from Colombo Airport to Bentota, but buses travel from the Katunayake Airport Bus Station to the Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal is around a 45-minute journey. Then, from the Colombo Bastian Mawatha Bus Terminal to Aluthgama station (which is near Bentota) takes another 2 hours, it’s a long journey. 

A taxi journey from the Colombo Airport to Bentota will cost Rs 10,000 upwards, with a journey between 1.5 to 2 hours by car. Taxis run on meters and do not have fixed rates. There is a taxi counter in the arrivals hall, and taxis are always available at the airport. There are also ride-sharing apps like Uber and PickMe available at the airport. 

There are trains available from Colombo Fort Railway Station to Bentota. The train journey is pleasant and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding area and the coast. To reach the train station, you would need to take a bus or a taxi from the airport, and then the train ride takes around 2 hours.  Rental car companies are available at the airport, and the 67-mile journey can take anywhere from 1-2 hours, depending on traffic and speed. 

How do I get around the city using public transportation?

Getting around Bentota by tuk-tuk is the most popular form of transportation. There are public buses, too; they operate on various routes and are budget-friendly. But not many of the bus routes are beneficial to travelers. Trains are used to travel between major cities. Tuk-tuks will be the most popular and affordable way to travel short distances in town. They can be found at various places around the city, especially around the beaches, outside hotels, and around the main attractions. Be sure to negotiate a fare before you begin your journey; a general price for a trip around the beach is about Rs 100, Rs 300 to get from one beach to another. Motorcycles and scooters are also available for quick, cheap transportation around the city.

Should I rent a car in Bentota?

There are two monsoon seasons prominent in Sri Lanka that bring copious amounts of rain to different parts of the country throughout the year. The dry season is from November to April, which is a very popular time for tourists to visit the island with pleasant weather. May and June are also a good time to visit and are a lot quieter, with better value. There may be a few showers, but nothing too bad. July is when the east-coast monsoon season begins with heavy rains that hit the coast and start to tail off in September. The period from September to November is the inter-monsoon season with higher chances of rain. This is still a good time to visit with discounted prices for travel and accommodation, and fewer crowds, if you don’t mind the occasional shower, it’s not going to be raining the entire time.
