City Center (Centro)

This bustling district is the historic and commercial heart of San José, where you’ll find the city’s most important cultural landmarks. The area is centered around the Plaza de la Cultura, the iconic National Theater, the Gold Museum, and the Jade Museum. While it is the best area for sightseeing and is very walkable during the day, it’s best to take a taxi at night.

Barrio Escalante

Barrio Amón & Otoya

Located just north of the downtown core, this historic area offers a tranquil and charming escape. It provides a peaceful base that is still within walking distance of the main downtown attractions.

Escazú

La Sabana & Rohrmoser

Centered around the vast La Sabana Metropolitan Park, the city’s “green lung,” this area offers a more relaxed, residential feel. It is home to the National Stadium, the Costa Rican Art Museum, and many international hotel chains, making it a popular hub for both business travelers and families. While it has excellent restaurants, they are more spread out than in Escalante. It’s a great choice for those who want access to green space and a central location without the intensity of being right downtown.

Santa Ana

Located further west of Escazú, Santa Ana is a trendy and rapidly growing upscale suburb with a slightly more laid-back vibe. Known for its warmer, sunnier climate, this area features modern lifestyle centers, chic restaurants, golf courses, and new condominium complexes. Like Escazú, it is not walkable and requires a car, but it offers a secure and polished suburban experience away from the urban core.
