Sarapiqui Rainforest – Where to Stay

Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí
This bustling river-port town is the commercial and logistical heart of the Sarapiquí region. It offers a glimpse into authentic, rural Costa Rican life rather than a polished tourist center. The town itself is easily walkable, with banks, supermarkets, local restaurants (sodas), and the main bus terminal. Its primary role for tourists is as a starting point for river adventures, as many boat tours and rafting trips depart from its docks. While most eco-lodges are located outside of town, staying here offers convenience for transportation and access to local amenities.

The Chilamate & La Virgen Corridor
For those seeking total immersion in the rainforest, the corridor along the main roads just outside Puerto Viejo is the premier destination. This area is characterized by lush jungle, a symphony of wildlife sounds, and a focus on ecotourism. Here you will find world-renowned nature reserves like La Selva Biological Station and Tirimbina Rainforest Center, alongside a variety of eco-lodges and nature hotels. Staying in this zone offers unparalleled opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife spotting right from your cabin, but it is not walkable and requires a rental car or taxis to travel between reserves, restaurants, and the main town.

The Upper Sarapiquí River (San Miguel Area)
Located further south towards the mountains and Braulio Carrillo National Park, this area is the epicenter of adventure in Sarapiquí. This zone is defined by the river’s faster currents and is home to the region’s best whitewater rafting, with rapids ranging from Class II to IV. Several adventure tour operators and specialized lodges are based here, offering packages that combine rafting, canyoning, and zip-lining. This area is the perfect choice for adrenaline junkies who want to be close to the action while still being surrounded by spectacular natural beauty, offering a more high-energy experience than the quieter eco-lodges further north.
