Qingdao – Where to Stay

1st: Shinan District (May Fourth Square / CBD)
Best for: First-time visitors, families, and luxury seekers. This is the modern center of gravity. Staying here places you next to the iconic red “Wind of May” sculpture, the Olympic Sailing Center, and major shopping malls like MixC. The hotels here are high-rise international brands (Shangri-La, InterContinental) offering panoramic ocean views. It is clean, convenient, and the best hub for transport.

2nd: The Old Town (Zhan Qiao / Railway Station)
Best for: History buffs, budget travelers, and photographers. Located on the western tip of the peninsula, this area feels like Europe. You are walking distance from the Cathedral, the Train Station, and the German Governor’s Residence. The streets are cobbled and hilly. Accommodation ranges from youth hostels in historic buildings to mid-range local hotels. It has the most character but fewer modern conveniences.

3rd: Badaguan Scenic Area
Best for: Couples, romance, and peace. This is the most exclusive address in town. Staying within or near the Eight Great Passes means waking up under canopy trees and walking to the Number 2 Bathing Beach. There are a few boutique hotels and sanatoriums converted into guesthouses. It is incredibly quiet at night—almost too quiet for some—but the atmosphere is unmatched for romance.

4th: Laoshan District (Shilaoren Beach)
Best for: Beach lovers and nature enthusiasts. Located in the east, this district is closer to the mountains and home to Shilaoren (Old Stone Man) Beach, the best bathing beach in the city proper. The vibe here is open and resort-like. It is a great base if your primary goal is hiking Mount Laoshan or spending days on the sand, away from the traffic of the old city.

5th: Huangdao District (West Coast)
Best for: Resort vacations and beer festival attendees. This is a destination in itself. Separated from the main city by the tunnel, Huangdao offers massive resort hotels (Hilton, Sheraton) with private beach access along Golden Beach. It is perfect for a “staycation” style trip where you don’t plan to leave the hotel grounds often, or if you are visiting specifically for the Beer Festival madness in August.
