Algiers FAQ

How do I get to the airport to my hotel?

To get into Algiers city center from Algiers Houari Boumediene Airport, you can take the train or bus, get into the taxi line, or book a ride with the Yassir App.

The best option is to take the train. Tickets for the train cost around DA 80 one-way, and the journey is approximately 20 minutes. SNTF runs a commuter service between Agha and the Airport once every hour.

The bus operates every 30 minutes in the daytime to the city center. This takes longer than the train but costs around DA 20-45.

If you take a taxi or book a Yassir, a ride from the airport to the city center will cost you around DA 600- 1500.

How can I get around the city using public transportation?

The Subway is the most popular way to travel around the city. It’s also the fastest and the smoothest.
Each ride costs around DA 50, or there is a one-day pass that costs around DA 150. Another option that saves money is to purchase a 10, 20, 30, or 40 ride option.

The tram covers the entire northern part of Algiers. It’s safe and reliable. Keep in mind that it gets quite crowded during rush hour. Each ride costs around DA 40. You can also buy a metro+tram ticket. One pass costs around DA 70. A One-day pass (metro+tram) costs DA 200.

A fun way to get around is by Cable Car. The city has 6 lines, some of which can take you to the most popular tourist attractions in Algiers. Each ride costs DA 30.

Can I call or hail a taxi?

Taxis are ideal for traveling to destinations that aren’t possible on the subway, tram, and cable car map, however taking a taximeter in Algiers is quite an experience. We don’t recommend hailing a taxi on the street because you cannot just hail a taxi in the city and tell the driver where to go. Depending on your destination, it’s the driver who decides whether to take you or not. Aside from that, metered taxis carry several passengers at a time. If you want the taxi for yourself, you will have to agree on the price first as the meter will not be used.

Taxis can be found at taxi stands but negotiate the price before riding. A tip is not expected but can be given if the service is really good.

We recommend using the Yassir app instead, it’s a much cheaper and more reliable way to go. If you are familiar with Uber, it works the same way.

What is the currency in Algiers, Algeria?

The official currency for Algeria is the Algerian Dinar (DZD). The Dinar is divided into santeem; 1 Dinar = 100 santeem. Bank notes are issued by the Central Bank of Algeria.

Foreign currency is not accepted in most shops. You cannot purchase Algerian Dinar prior to arrival in Algiers. Currency can be exchanged at the airport and larger hotels (Euro and US dollars).
