Getting around Arusha
By Daladala
The main mode of public transportation in Arusha is Dala Dalas and Boda Bodas. The Daladala are minibusses that ply their way through all the main routes in town. They are extremely cheap and cost around 600 TZS, a fixed price for any trip around town, prices are listed on the sides of the dala dala. These minibusses only depart when they are full. These shared rides can be very cramped, and road accidents involving dala dalas are frequent. There is a large station located on Stadium Street.

Boda Boda’s are motorbike (piki piki) taxis that are quick and cheap, they can be found parked all over Arusha. The cost depends on the distance traveled and a price should be negotiated ahead of time. Make sure there is an extra helmet for safety.
By Car
It is not recommended to hire a car when visiting Arusha, however there are options to hire your own driver when visiting especially for daytrips to Arusha National Park. The driving culture in Africa is very different from Western style driving, drivers must have great road instincts, profound map reading skills, and the ability to know their way around. Generally the advice is not to drive in Tanzania. The roads are through rural areas, parks, and reserves that are dirt roads, meaning a four-wheel drive vehicle is a must.

There are plenty of taxis available in Arusha, they are affordable and a standard fare for a short trip costs around TSH 4,000 to 16,000 depending on the total distance traveled. A short trip within the city center should not cost you more than TSH 5,000. Taxis can be found outside of hotels and major shopping centers, as well as stations around the city. Prices at night for a taxi are considerably higher.

There are two airports servicing the city of Arusha; the Kilimanjaro International Airport located 37 miles east of the city, halfway to Moshi, and the Arusha Airport for domestic travel only, located around 4 miles away from the city center. Both airports offer car rentals, buses, and taxis.
How do I get from the airport to my hotel?
From Kilimanjaro Airport there are a host of reliable taxi companies readily available and can be found right outside the airport. The ride takes around 45 minutes and will cost around $50 (approximately 127,250 TZS). There are several international car rental companies available at the airport and the drive to Arusha is beautiful with picturesque panoramic views. There is an airport shuttle that can be found right outside the airport and costs around 10,000 TZS. It is a shared ride with other passengers heading to Arusha.
At Arusha Airport there are rental cars available, however, taking a taxi is the quickest way to reach the city center.
How Do I get around by train in Arusha?
There is a train from Arusha to Moshi covering 53 miles, the journey takes around 2-3 hours.

Is Arusha a dangerous city, is there anything I should be aware of?

At night stay in well-lit and populated areas, and use reputable transportation companies instead of taking rides from strangers. Avoid traveling alone, especially at night.

There are a wealth of African Curio shops, bazaars, and local markets in the city, many can be found between India Road, and the Clock Tower. Tanzania offers a wealth of traditional arts and crafts, and Arusha happens to be one of the best places in the country to shop for these items. Arusha’s Central Market is one of the best to visit with a great atmosphere, it’s located between Somali and Sokoine Roads.
