Surfing in Asia & the Pacific

If anyone is going to take on the challenge of dethroning Hawaii and the United States as the Kings of surf culture, certainly it will be up to the countries in and around Asia and Oceania. With strategic positions from the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean across to the western portion of the Pacific, it’s no wonder that surfing took hold and flourished here. With exotic beaches, remote islands, warm weather, and reliable waves, surfing thrives in the region and is here to stay.

Below find our favorites for catching a wave in these exciting countries, and remember to visit Tripmasters to book your surf getaway!

Asia: A land of contrasts and adventure, Asia presents visitors with any number of exciting activities. Perhaps the most overlooked is surfing. Though known for stunning beaches and islands, travelers might want to do more than lounge on white sands and dip in exotic pools.

Bali, Indonesia is often called the Surf Capital of Asia, but there are so many more hotspots! Particularly popular are the Maldives Islands (pictured), Bentota, Sri Lanka, and Busan, South Korea. Below you will find links to some more popular and surprising Asian locations for surfers of all ages and skill levels.

Oceania: With sunny coasts, warm waters, and legendary waves, most of Oceania is a haven for surfers. Australia, New Zealand, Guam, French Polynesia, the Fiji Islands, and the Cook Islands offer up some of the most iconic modern surf spots in the world, let alone their own region.

Australia is often known as the King among these countries, with popular surfing found in Bondi Beach in Sydney and all along the Gold Coast (pictured) in the east, while Perth remains in demand on the west coast. Really though, anywhere along the coast is a “can’t miss” spot!

The rest of Oceania is not exactly missing out! Raglan Beach near Hamilton, New Zealand is a favorite, as are spots in Tahiti and Moorea (French Polynesia) and Rarotonga (Cook Islands)!
