Getting around Boquete
By Walking
The town is compact and easily walkable. Most hotels, restaurants, cafes, and tour offices are within easy walking distance of the central plaza.
By Bus
Boquete has buses and minibuses that offer routes that loop around town. They start in the center of Boquete (El Bajo), make a loop into the neighborhood or nearby village they are going to, and then loop back into Boquete. There are designated bus stops, but you can also wave down a bus to signal the driver you’d like to get on. The same goes for getting off the bus. The destinations are written on the front of the bus. The buses are budget-friendly.
By Cycling
Cycling is the most common mode of transport in Bocas. Bicycle rentals run approximately $1/hr or $5/day. The roads are very flat and in good repair, which makes getting around on a bike very easy.
By Taxi
Taxis are readily available in Boquete and are inexpensive to use around the city. If you want to travel to a destination outside of town, negotiate the fare before you start your trip. Your hotel staff can provide an idea of what you can expect to pay for your trip. A trip to the Pipeline and Lost Waterfall’s trailheads should cost around $8 – $10 USD.
Uber is not currently available here (June 2025).
By Scooters
If you are comfortable riding a scooter, there ea a few places in town that offer scooter rentals. Expect to pay around $40 USD for a full-day rental.

Boquete is a small mountain town in the Chiriquí Highlands of western Panama, near the border with Costa Rica. It’s about a 45-minute drive from the city of David.
It is a popular destination for hiking, coffee plantation tours, outdoor adventure, and just relaxing in the mountains. It’s also popular for birdwatching and expat living.
How do I get to Boquete?
The easiest way is to fly into David (DAV) and drive or take a bus/taxi up to Boquete. There are domestic flights from Panama City to David multiple times per day.
How do I get around in Boquete?

Car Rental: Cars can be found for as little as $20 USD per day for a multi-day rental. Most rental agencies require drivers to be at least 25, though some will accept drivers at 21 if they have a credit card. However, you don’t really need a car here unless you’re heading out to explore more of the region.

What is the weather like Boquete? When should I go?
Boquete can be visited year-round. Thanks to the cooler climate in the mountains, temperatures are pretty much the same year-round, hovering around 72 degrees F and rarely dropping below 53 degrees F.
March and February are the warmest months. May – December are the rainy months, but the weather is still nice the rest of the day. The rains get gradually more intense in July-November. If you visit during the rainy season, plan all your hikes and other outdoorsy activities for the morning, and use the rainy afternoon to relax.
Mid-January is Boquete’s famous Coffee & Flower Festival. The festival lasts ten days, and thousands of visitors descend on the small town for this occasion, so make sure to book your trip well in advance.
What is the dining and food like in Boquete?
You’ll find a blend of local Panamanian eateries (fondas), international cuisine, and farm-to-table restaurants. There are plenty of Western restaurants and fancy coffee shops in Boquete. If you want to save money, stick to local restaurants with a set lunch menu.

Can I pay/tip in US dollars?
The currency of Panama is the Panama Balboa. Panama accepts the US dollars as its main form of currency in addition to the Panamanian balboa (PAB).
I do not speak Spanish. Will many people speak English in Bocas?
Spanish is the official language of Panama. Many people in Boquete speak English, especially in the hospitality industry catering to tourists and expats. We suggest you get an English-Spanish translation book or app on your phone.
Is Boquete a safe area?
Yes, it is known to be very safe, which is why so many North Americans choose to retire here. Violent crime here is very rare. And even petty crime is rarer than in other parts of Panama.
That said, always use common sense. Don’t leave valuables unattended in restaurants and public spaces, and don’t flash expensive jewelry. Only take as much cash with you as you plan to use. Avoic walking around alone at night.
Do I need a visa to visit Panama?
No, a visa is not required for entry into Panama. U.S. citizens need a valid passport to enter Panama. U.S. citizens with expired or damaged passports may not be allowed to enter and could be sent back to the United States at their own expense. The website for Panama’s immigration and naturalization office (https://migracion.gob.pa/) has the most up-to-date information. Before you travel to Panama, check the website for visa and other entry requirements.
Can I drink tap water in Boquete?
Yes, in most areas of Boquete the tap water is clean and safe to drink, though some travels may prefer bottled water just in case.
What should I do in an emergency or if I need medical attention?
911 is the emergency number for police, medical, and fire.
There are multiple private clinics and urgent care in Boquete that are equipped to help with general and some specialized care. The closest hospital is in nearby David, about 45 minutes away. For serious emergencies, head to Hospital Chiriquie (public) or private hospitals like Centro Medico Mmae Lewis, Hospital Regional, or Hospital Materno-Infantil Jose Domingo de Obaldia.
