Elba Island FAQ
Where is the Island of Elba?
Only 40 minutes from the mainland by ferry, Elba is an amazing island situated between the Tyrrhennian and Ligurian Sea, and is the largest of the Tuscan Archipelago. It can be easily reached from Piombino with both Toremar and Moby Lines ferries. There is also an airport on the island, Marina di Campo, that is served by Intersky for international flights (to Friedrichshafen, Munich and Zürich), and ElbaFly for national routes.
Elba is Italy’s third-largest island, but at about 17×11 miles, it’s much smaller than Sicily or Sardinia. So while it has a tall, mountainous interior speckled with ancient villages, the sea is never far away. Coastal fishing and port towns in soft pastels are interspersed with some fine sandy beaches, with only the occasional overdeveloped spot.
What is the location/Geography of Elba?
Elba is 10 miles from the Tuscany coast at Piombino, the departure point of ferries to the island. Although it’s only about 12 miles wide, crossing from one side to the other is a 90-minute drive due to its mountainous terrain and slow-moving, curving roads. About 30,000 people live full-time on Elba, but this number increases greatly in the summer months.
How do I get to Elba Island?
A chartered helicopter or private boat are a few options to get to the Elba, however this can be very costly. Most visitors arrive to Elba by ferry. Torremar and Moby both offer numerous daily sailings to Portoferraio, Rio Marina and Cavo, with Portoferraio being the busiest port. Sailings from Piombino take about 40 minutes. You can bring a car aboard most ferries. Unless you plan to stay in one area and just hit the beach, a car is recommended on Elba – just be aware that the roads are twisty with some hair-raising drops and often distracting views.
Ferry boats leave from Piombino and arrive in three alternative destinations: Portoferraio in 1 hour, Rio Marina and Cavo in about 45 minutes.
What are the major towns/cities of the Island?
Portoferraio: The capital of Elba, its largest city and the port most ferries from Piobino arrive. It was Napoleon’s home base during his exile, and today, offers ancient and rich history. The city has a huge waterfront fortress, Roman ruins, and several sights related to Napoleon’s stay. While the industrial area around the port is not very appealing, the “centro storico” (historic center) is colorful and nice to walk around.
Capoliveri: Placed high on a hilltop on the southeastern part of the island, inland Capoliveri offers glimpses and beginnings dating to the Roman age. It is a pretty, medieval town with several good restaurants, lots of vacation rental houses, and apartments, and a relaxed vibe. Some of the best beaches in Elba are a few miles downhill, including Laconella, Felciaio, and Innamorata beaches.
Marciana and Marciana Marina: Situated west of Portoferraio, these two communities are right next to each other, offering very different vibes. Marciana is high in the hills with a romantic, pedestrian-only center. Marciana Marina is a small pier with a Pisan stone tower from the 12th century. The marina is a chic beach town, with a lively promenade lined with shops, bars, and restaurants.
Rio Marina: This unique town began life as an iron mining center, and its streets, houses, and even its beaches still bear a reddish hue. Rio Marina has a spectacular mineralogical museum that deserves a visit. Today, the town is a thriving beach resort.
Porto Azzurro: Located on Elba’s east coast and built around a protected cove, Porto Azurro is one of the island’s top beach resorts, with Barbarossa, Terranera, and Reale beaches among the most popular. The town has a picturesque appearance, with plenty of hotels, restaurants, and interesting things to see off the beach.
Marina di Campo: This is a great area for a beach vacation offering a long stretch of sandy beach, and several seaside restaurants and hotels. This location is also a good base for exploring other parts of the island, especially to the west.
