Experience Tambor Beach
Overview
Tambor is a destination that soothes. Tucked away in the serene, horseshoe-shaped Bahía Ballena (Whale Bay), it blends tranquil nature with authentic coastal life, delivering the essence of “Pura Vida.”
Discover calm, grey-sand beaches perfect for swimming, listen for the vibrant calls of scarlet macaws, and you might as well fall in love with this peaceful corner of paradise.

Orientation
Tambor is a small coastal village on the southern Nicoya Peninsula, with its main road hosting local businesses. To the north lies the ferry town of Paquera, while to the south, a crossroads connects to the bohemian vibe of Montezuma and the surf breaks of Santa Teresa. Tambor serves as a perfectly tranquil base from which to explore these more bustling neighbors.

Nature & Wildlife
Visit the nearby Curú Wildlife Refuge, where marked trails make it easy to spot howler monkeys, capuchins, as well as wild scarlet macaws.
Then, explore the marine life of Bahía Ballena itself; dolphins and humpback whales (in season) can sometimes be spotted in the bay, along with large flocks of pelicans and frigatebirds.

Gastronomy
Tambor offers a taste of authentic Costa Rica. Visit a “soda”—a small, family-run restaurant—for a traditional casado plate, or try fresh seafood like ceviche and whole fried snapper.
Quench your thirst with a natural fruit smoothie (batido) or a cold Imperial, the local beer, for a dining experience that is casual, fresh, and flavorful.

Nightlife
Tambor’s nightlife is laid-back and understated. The evening’s main event is often enjoying a cocktail at a beachfront restaurant while watching a spectacular sunset over the bay. A few local bars and hotel restaurants offer a relaxed atmosphere for an evening drink, sometimes with live music.

For a vibrant party scene, you’ll need to take a taxi to nearby Montezuma or Santa Teresa, which are known for their lively bars and beach gatherings. In Tambor, the excitement comes from the sounds of the jungle and the gentle lapping of the waves.

Shopping
As Tambor is not a major shopping hub, retail is simple. You will find small supermarkets (pulperías) for essentials, a pharmacy, and a few souvenir shops offering locally made crafts. It’s the perfect place to buy a handcrafted memento of your trip.

Other Highlights
Take a boat tour to Isla Tortuga for its white-sand beaches and excellent snorkeling. Enjoy a classic coastal adventure with a horseback ride along Tambor’s long beach at sunset. The bay’s calm conditions are also ideal for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and sport fishing excursions.

Additional days in Tambor Beach
Should you be able to spend additional days in the area, be sure to visit Montezuma. This nearby town has a bohemian, artistic vibe and is famous for its stunning waterfalls, where you can swim in natural pools. The town itself has a more eclectic mix of shops and restaurants.
