The World’s Most Incredible Falls
There is something so awe-inspiring about waterfalls. We can’t help but marvel at the dramatic change in the elevation and the force of gravity, the prisms of light thrown off when the sun hits the cascading water, the often tranquil sound, the important minerals and oxygen they generate for plant and aquatic life, or their sheer power. Travelers add them to “must-do” lists all the time; whether they want to swim in the enticing pools the falls pour into, dive from their scenic heights, or just take in the serenity! We don’t know which of these appeals most to you, but below we have curated a list of our favorite majestic and impressive falls from around the world. Victoria Falls: It is certainly hard to look past the sheer size and impressive views of beloved Victoria Falls, which sits at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe in Africa. These falls are a favorite for travelers, and we think it is easy to understand why. The falls are a designated UNESCO World Heritage site and are known locally as “The Smoke that Thunders.” This region offers world-class adventure and a bustling tourism scene offering exciting wildlife safaris and exquisite views.
Iguazu (or Iguassu) Falls: The chain of individual waterfalls that stretches nearly 2 miles along the border of Argentina and Brazil can be viewed and enjoyed from either side – and all the spectacular cascading water never fails to impress. From Argentina, you can get up close and personal in certain areas of the falls, though many will say the most impressive views are enjoyed from the Brazilian side. We won’t pick favorites, but we encourage you to visit both sides and make the decision for yourself. Just don’t miss the horseshoe-shaped Devil’s Throat, which marks the site’s largest waterfall.
Don’t overlook the surrounding areas too: the UNESCO-protected Iguazu National Park, full of lushly forested lands is a biome known for its incredible diversity of plant and animal species.
Niagara Falls: The spectacular Niagara Falls straddles the border between New York and Ontario, Canada, which allows visitors on both sides to enjoy the expansive views and continuous roaring water. On the U.S. side, the falls are found in Niagara Falls State Park (the country’s oldest state park).
While it is far from being the tallest waterfall in the world, it is certainly one of the most well-known for its scope and power. Visit “Cave of the Winds,” where you can descend 175 feet into the Niagara Gorge to experience the power of the falls mid-flow from the Hurricane Deck. You will want to bring a rain jacket or poncho because you will get soaked!
