Sámara Centro (Downtown & Main Beach)

This lively, walkable community is the heart and soul of Sámara, defined by its friendly and relaxed “Pura Vida” vibe. The town’s main streets run parallel to the beach, hosting a great selection of local restaurants (sodas), international cafes, tour operators, and boutique shops. The soul of the town is its beautiful crescent-shaped bay, protected by a coral reef. The calm, gentle waves make it perfect for swimming and beginner surf lessons, attracting families and travelers of all ages who want easy access to everything Sámara has to offer.

The Hills of Sámara & Santo Domingo

For those seeking tranquility and breathtaking scenery, the hills rising behind Sámara offer a completely different experience. This area is characterized by its lush tropical forest, stunning panoramic ocean views, and a private, peaceful atmosphere. Here you will find boutique hotels, luxury villas, and eco-lodges, often featuring amenities like infinity pools and large terraces. Staying in the hills provides incredible opportunities for wildlife sightings and cooler evening breezes, but it is not walkable and requires a rental car, preferably a 4×4, to access the beach and town amenities.

Playa Carrillo

Located just a few minutes’ drive south of Sámara Centro, this pristine beach is a postcard-perfect paradise. Carrillo is renowned for its wide, palm-lined bay and exceptionally calm, turquoise waters, making it one of the most beautiful and family-friendly beaches in Costa Rica. There is no commercial development on the sand, which preserves its natural beauty. The small adjacent village has a few excellent restaurants and places to stay, offering a much quieter alternative to the main town while still being conveniently close to all of Sámara’s activities.

Cangrejal & Playa Izquierda

At the northern end of Sámara Bay lies the residential neighborhood of Cangrejal, which offers a more authentic, local feel away from the main tourist hub. This area is quieter and primarily consists of homes and rental properties. It leads to Playa Izquierda, a rocky point known for its consistent left-hand surf break, popular with intermediate surfers. While still within a long walk or short bike ride from the center, this neighborhood is ideal for those seeking a more secluded stay, surfers wanting to be close to the waves, or long-term visitors looking to settle into the local rhythm.
