By Rental Car

Costa Ballena includes Dominical, Uvita, and Ojochal, and is a spreadout region with limited public transportation. For this reason, we recommend renting a car. There are rental options available in San Jose, Quepos, and Uvita. Having a car will allow flexibility and easy access to different beaches, towns, and attractions within the area.

A 4-wheel drive is recommended as some roads, especially to waterfalls and jungle lodges, are unpaved and hilly.

By Bus

Buses are available but only with limited schedules and schedules. Local buses run between Quepos, Dominical, Uvita, Ojochal, and Palmar Norte but are infrequent – every few hours. The buses are slow with no air-conditioning, and routes may not reach remote areas. Also, be aware that bus schedules change frequently.

By Taxi

Taxis are available in the area, but not always abundant. It is best to arrange them in advance through your hotel or restaurant. Private drivers can be hired for day trips or airport transfers. Be informed and always confirm the fare before starting your journey; most taxis don’t use meters in rural areas.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

San Jose International Airport is the best international airport to fly into for visiting the Costa Ballena region. From San Jose, you can drive, or take a shuttle or bus.

Driving: There are two routes you can take from San Jose via the Costanera Sur (route 34) or Cerro de la Muerte (route 2). The best one to take is the Costanera Sur Route 34 because it’s a flat, well-paved highway that is easy to drive. The Cerro de la Muerte is a very narrow, windy road from San Isidro de Perez Zeledon so you have to drive slowly and carefully and it is often forry in certain sections.

Costenera Sur Route 34 takes about 3.5 hours. Via Route 2 takes about 4.5 hours from San Jose.

By Bus: From Sand Jose, there is a bus twice daily with Empresa Tracopa leaving from Calle 5 Ave 18-20 at 6 am and 3 pm. There is a bus from Uvita to San Jose every day at 5:30 am and 1:30 pm and it takes about 7 hours.

There are also other Tracopa buses that stop at Uvita leaving from the same San Jose station. You can take the San Jose to Golfito, Dvid, Sierpe, Canoas, and Laurel buses and get off at Utiva.

How do I get around in the Costa Ballena area?

The most convenient way to get around is to rent a car, which offers the most flexibility to explore the area. However, you can also use public buses, though they are slower and less frequent, making a car rental the preferred option for most visitors.

Do I need a 4×4 in Costa Ballena?

If your hotel is off the main highway and you’re only staying for a couple of days, then no, a 4×4 is not required for the area. However, if you plan to explore the area or you are staying at a hotel that is up in the mountains, then renting a 4×4 will be necessary. If you plan to see more of the area, then renting a car is the only way to do it and it si best to rent a 4-wheel drive if you want to explore.

December to April is the dry season and the most popular time to visit. This time of year is sunny with calm seas. The green season, May to November, has fewer visitors and offers lush scenery and great whale-watching opportunities, especially from August – October.
