Surf’s Up!
Surfing is one of the world’s most popular watersports. With roots in premodern Hawaii and Polynesia, it is no surprise that the Pacific Ocean is home-base to surfing enthusiasts. In the 18th century, the sea captain and explorer James Cook wrote about canoe and board surfing after his trips to Hawaii and Tahiti, but it was Hawaiian native Duke Kahanamoku who brought the modern sport to the forefront of consciousness. He is credited with popularizing the activity in the 20th century, and the rules, gear, techniques, and language of surfing grew out of his practice of the sport. It goes without saying that the sport caught on globally, as surfers constantly chase new surf breaks and hunt for the elusive perfect wave.
To some, surfing is merely an outdoor recreational activity, while to others it is a way of life, and still to some it is spiritual communion with nature. But it seems no matter where you go, from the wild and cold North Atlantic to the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, and from the challenging waves of the Pacific to the Indian Ocean, the Red Sea, and the Mediterranean, you can find surfers just about everywhere. I guess the Beach Boys were right after all … Everybody’s doing it.
