Hualien – Where to Stay

1st: The Golden Triangle (Downtown)
This is the logistical center. Staying here places you in the middle of the “food triangle,” surrounded by mochi shops, dumpling houses, and souvenir stores. It is the most convenient area for travelers relying on public transport or scooters, as the main bus terminal and Dongdamen Night Market are within walking distance. It’s busy, lit up, and smells perpetually of steamed buns.

2nd: Meilun District
Located on the hill to the northeast of downtown, Meilun is the quieter, governmental district. It is characterized by wide, tree-lined avenues, the Pine Garden, and ocean views. The hotels here (like the Chateau de Chine) are larger and resort-style. Stay here if you want a view of the harbor and a breeze, removed from the scooter traffic of the center.

3rd: Qixingtan Area
If the sound of waves is your priority, stay here. Located near the air force base and the beach, this area offers guesthouses and B&Bs with direct ocean views. It is isolated from the city’s dining scene (you’ll need a taxi or scooter), but waking up to the sun rising over the Pacific horizon makes the inconvenience worth it. Note that fighter jets can be loud during training hours.

4th: Ji’an Township
Just south of the city, Ji’an feels like a leafy suburb. It was a planned Japanese immigrant village, and the grid layout remains. Today, it is famous for its high concentration of charming, design-forward Minsu (Bed & Breakfasts). Staying here offers a homely, residential vibe with gardens and mountain views, perfect for slow travelers with a car.
